Background: Health-related quality of life is a critical health index for older adults. Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the impacts of sociodemographic characteristics and cardinal health problems on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Korean older adults. Methods: Data were extracted from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2018. The data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0, employing multiple linear regression with a complex sample design. Results: The overall mean score for HRQoL in the older Korean population was 0.89 points. HRQoL scores were significantly influenced by covariances adjusted for sociodemographic variables such as gender, age, marital status, and economic activities among Korean elderly (R2 = 0.110, p < 0.001). They were also significantly influenced by covariances adjusted for cardinal health problems such as obesity, activity limitation, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia among Korean older adults (R2 = 0.286, p < 0.001); however, among the covariances, activity limitation was the only variable to significantly affect HRQoL among older Korean people (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings implied that public health policies and programs for HRQoL are needed to promote proper physical activity and devise tailored measures for targeted sociodemographic variables among Korean older adults.

This study analyzed the factors affecting the health-related quality of life of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) according to age. We also aimed to determine appropriate strategies to improve their quality of life. Data from the Korea Health Panel Survey (2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016) were used in this study. A total of 3806 patients with BPH were divided into 2 groups: younger adults (aged under 65 years) and older adults (aged over 65 years). In addition, a logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors affecting the quality of life of young and older patients with BPH. In younger adult patients with BPH, the higher the level of education, the higher the quality of life by a factor of 1.379, and the more intense the physical activity, the lower the quality of life by a factor of 0.791. Also, the longer the sitting time, the lower the quality of life by a factor of 0.765. In contrast, for older adult patients with BPH, the quality of life improved by factors of 1.601 and 2.921, respectively, for health insurance and higher income level. In addition, it was found that the quality of life decreased by a factor of 0.754 in patients who drink alcohol. In order to improve the quality of life of the middle-aged adult population with BPH, it is necessary to reduce sitting time through constant physical activity. Moreover, the cost of medical care should be reduced and the quality of life increased through reductions in surgical treatment, as the burden of medical expenses will degrade the quality of life for older adults.

The lower urinary tract (LUT), in particular the prostate, has been theoretically recognized as a target for SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, common pathophysiological mechanisms have been described for BPE/LUTS and COVID-19, including RAS dysregulation, androgen receptors, and MetS-related factors. These factors raise concerns about the possibility of worse urological outcomes due to BPE/LUTS progression in COVID-19 patients. The available results suggest a correlation between SARS-CoV-2 infection, exacerbation or new onset of LUTS, and semen impairment. BPE patients’ care and management have been deeply affected by COVID-19. In the midst of the pandemic, the main urological guidelines suggested postponement of BPH-related deferrable medical examinations and surgery. Telemedicine, therefore, gained attention and interest. Clinical evidence of impaired QoL or complications expedited surgical intervention. An informed consent covering the risk of COVID-19 and a negative molecular PCR within 72 hours of surgery were mandatory. A reduction in procedures under general anaesthesia was recommended. Long waiting lists accrued worldwide during the pandemic, leading to regular review of the BPE waiting lists and patients’ clinical status, encouraging the increase of minimally invasive office-based procedures, even in the post-COVID-19 era, and the improvement of telemedicine. Prospective studies are still needed to assess the course of LUTS/BPE patients after COVID-19.
