Quality of Life in Parkinson’s Disease – Patient, Clinical and Research Perspectives

Abstract: Parkinson's disease (PD) has a severely negative impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients and their caregivers. Health-related QoL (HRQoL) is a patient-reported component of QoL that includes physical, mental and social domains and in PD is an increasingly important part of patient monitoring. HRQoL in PD is assessed using a range of different generic (e.g. Short Form-36) and PD-specific (e.g. 39-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire) instruments/questionnaires. It is important that HRQoL is regularly … Show more

“…Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that manifests a spectrum of motor, psychiatric, cognitive, sleep, and autonomic signs and symptoms. The key underlying motor manifestation is caused by a slow and progressive degeneration of dopamine‐producing neurons in the substantia nigra . Parkinson's disease affects 7 to 10 million persons worldwide, making it the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease .…”

“…Quality of life (QoL) measures are patient reported outcomes that attempt to measure physical, mental and social wellbeing that can either be related to general health or disease specific depending on the instrument. There are many generic and PD specific tools available although the most common QoL scale used in clinical trials of PD is the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) which captures the impact of both motor and non-motor symptoms on quality of life [53]. The impact of PD on QoL has been reviewed by others.…”

“…The impact of PD on QoL has been reviewed by others. In summary, PD has a profound impact on quality of life, has been shown to correlate with disease severity and has been useful at determining the impact of symptomatic therapy on patients in early as well as late disease [53,54].…”

“…Parkinson's disease affects approximately 1.5 million people worldwide and the cost of the treatment is more than 14 billion a year according to research published in Movement disorder 2014 [2]. This disease is caused due to insufficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine [3].…”
