Quality of Life in Patients With Confirmed and Suspected Spinal CSF Leaks

Victor Liaw,
Morgan McCreary,
Deborah I. Friedman

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a debilitating condition typically producing orthostatic headache limiting upright time. SIH is often difficult to diagnose and treat, negatively affecting quality-of-life (QoL) in patients with the disorder. We studied QOL in confirmed and suspected SIH patients using standardized instruments, including suicidality. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional survey of adult patients … Show more

“…SIH profoundly degrades health-related quality of life and severely affects ability to maintain partner relationships. 1 , 2 One report noted that SF-36 quality-of-life scores were lower than those reported for patients with multiple sclerosis, measures of spiritual well-being were worse than those reported among patients with cancer or AIDS, and nearly a quarter of patients with SIH symptoms described having wished they were dead. 2 This is a true crisis in the life of those afflicted.…”

“…Studies also show that the symptoms of low CSF pressure can have a significant effect on quality of life. Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts are common in this patient population [11,12]. An incorrect diagnosis can result in an incorrect therapeutic workup and even unnecessary surgical interventions [3].…”
