Introduction. Ageing of societies is a process apparent in nearly all countries worldwide. Many families will not be able to provide care services for the elderly, the burden of care will fall mainly on public and private institutions. This puts employees of nursing homes in front of numerous challenges in order to provide seniors with improvement of their life satisfaction.Aim. The purpose of the study was to assess the life satisfaction of elderly nursing home residents in the Mazovian region and to demonstrate variables that affect it.Material and methods.. The research was carried out in 2018 among the 250 elderly nursing home residents from Mazovia. During the test, a diagnostic survey method and a questionnaire technique were used. The research tool was the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Katz’s Activities of Daily Living Scale, Hodgkinson’s Abbreviated Mental Test Score, Basic Hope Inventory (BHI-12), Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS), and the authors’ survey questionnaire.Results. Among the respondents, the dominant group included people with low life satisfaction (42.8%). A statistically significant relationship was found between life satisfaction and the age of the respondents and selected psychometric scales. There was no such correlation for the level of mobility, duration of stay at the nursing home and the size of the inhabited facility.Conclusions. Elderly people living in nursing homes from Mazovia enjoy life satisfaction at a low and average level. The results distinguish three groups of residents exhibiting a lower satisfaction with life, namely, new arrivals, the oldest, and suffering from a minimum of one illness. Nursing home personnel who deal with patients on an everyday basis should aim to improve their life satisfaction.

Objective. The purpose of this study was to analyse the subjective quality of life (QoL) perceived by older people in German nursing homes following the group-living principle.Methods. The Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) as health-related QoL measuring instrument was employed in 25 nursing homes (n=404 participants). A comparison with the national German representative sub-sample of independent living elders (age-group over 75) was conducted. Psychometric properties and appropriateness were analysed.Results. Our findings indicate an acceptable perception of residents’ QoL. The mean NHP scale scores show, that the perceived QoL of residents in group-living nursing home reached nearly the same level as independently living elders (national German reference values, age group over 75 years, except for the NHP sub-scale physical mobility). QoL related results on life satisfaction and feeling of happiness confirm the NHP findings. The preliminary pilot study protocol could be replicated, according to good scientific practice.Conclusions and implications. The report presents the first major investigation in the research field of subjective quality of life in group-living nursing homes. The study focused on people over 75 years of age with age-specific reduced physical and mental abilities. The NHP should also be considered as a reliable, valid and for older people appropriate instrument. Due to the lack of research on residents’ perspectives, further studies should follow to establish age-specific and care setting-specific reference data for nursing home residents. In particular, more research is needed to answer the question, which care setting best meets people’s essential needs in older age.

In [9], the authors investigated the impact small-scaled nursing care homes have on health outcome-related QoL. They found out that moving from large-scaled to a small-scaled nursing house can improve the aspect of the QoL by reducing the anxiety.…”

Hospitals and nursing care homes are facing severe challenges such as lack of skilled workforces and cost explosion, among others. Especially, the western healthcare systems are headed over a cliff. German nursing care houses, hospitals, and government are working hard on solutions to overcome the crucial workforce's crises. Therefore, they are planning to hire nursing-workforces from abroad. They would also like to motivate families with monetary incentives, such as taxreduction, if they can care for their elderly and/or dementia family members at home. However, caring for a sick person at home is challenging for a working family member especially in the case the patient requests around-the-clock nursing care since elderly with cognitive impairments, people with physical disabilities, and people with dementia need (medical) assistance around the clock. The present study reveals an increasing tendency for family members to care for their sick family member at home despite the challenges and issues faced like the lack of time to intensively care for the sick person due to today's family lifestyle, challenging employment market, financial constraints, etc. The study reported in this chapter aims at providing family members willing to care for their sick member at home as long as possible with smart home automation enabled Patient@Home solution to effectively and efficiently care for their sick member despite working full time. People living in nursing care homes can also take benefit of the proposed system. Evidence shows the potential of the proposed system to effectively and efficiently assist in caring for people requesting nursing care around the clock. Though the health-related quality of life is positively impacted, patient's satisfaction is increased (better quality of experience).
