Quality of survival of patients with brain gliomas treated with postoperative CCNU and radiation therapy

Abstract: This prospective randomized clinical trial compared the effectiveness of combined treatment with CCNU and radiation therapy to the use of radiation therapy alone for the postoperative management of supratentorial brain gliomas (67% anaplastic) in 198 patients. The results were evaluated with the aid of a specially developed weighted neuropsychological test battery providing single-value estimation of "life quality" of patients, as well as with a clinical performance scale. Based on these methods, it was establ… Show more

“…In patients with malignant astrocytomas, currently used therapeutic modalities include surgical resection, radiation therapy and chemotherapy alone or in combination [2,5,10,15,20,22]. The quality-of-life index remained at a higher level only for the first ten months after surgery.…”

“…The end-point of most clinical trials, including this retrospective analysis of the University of Kiel data, has been survival time, or time to tumor progression. With the limited gain in survival that has been demonstrated for postoperative radiotherapy, and for the various chemo therapeutic agents, it is important to examine the quality of survival during the short remaining lifetime of most of these patients [43,46]. There is a need for objective quality of life data that should be integrated into the design of future clini cal trials.…”

“…In the study comparing postoperative radiation therapy for supratentorial glioma patients with combined treatment of radiation and CCNU chemotherapy, a weighted neuropsychologic test battery was applied as a HRQOL measure [80]. A sum score of all cognitive test results was calculated using a panel of expert neuropsychologists.…”
