Quality of the Threshold Algorithm in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Stratus versus Cirrus OCT

Abstract: With Cirrus OCT automatically performed and therefore objective measurements of central retinal thickness and retinal volume were provided correctly in 69.2% of the scans. Furthermore, this latest software version offers the possibility of manual correction of false positioned algorithm lines (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00568191).

“…Such errors in the automated detection of Bruch’s membrane induce wrong quantification of retinal thickness and may lead to erroneous decision of retreatment. Based on this automated retinal thickness, our findings are comparable to results previously obtained with Cirrus SD-OCT and Spectralis SD-OCT [21,25,26,27]. While the inner limiting membrane is always well defined, Bruch’s membrane was poorly defined in several cases, particularly in geographic atrophy [28].…”

“…SD-OCT led to a precise identification of retinal lesions in chorioretinal diseases with a greater qualitative follow-up [1,2,19,20]. Also, this device allows an automated threshold delineation more accurately thanks to its higher resolution imaging and an improved scanning speed [14,21]. The Spectralis SD-OCT software can locate the inner limiting membrane and Bruch’s membrane, allowing a quantitative analysis useful for the follow-up of AMD patients.…”

“…Various studies compare the performances of RT analysis between TD-OCT systems and SD-OCT systems with each other [11,12], whereas studies evaluating the RT measurements obtained by SD-OCT devices from different manufacturers are still rare [13][14][15].…”

“…According to our data, the correcting factor should be 1.48 to extrapolate CMT measurements from Stratus TD-OCT to Spectralis SD-OCT, 1.25 from Stratus TD-OCT to Cirrus SD-OCT and 1.18 from Cirrus SD-OCT to Spectralis SD-OCT. In previous studies a correction factor of 1.1 was suggested to extrapolate CMT values from Stratus SD-OCT to Spectral OCT/scanning laser ophthalmoscopy [16] , and Spectralis SD-OCT and Cirrus SD-OCT produced the highest CMT measurements when compared to the other commercially available SD-OCT devices [17,18] .…”
