Quality standards and recommendations for research in music and neuroplasticity

Abstract: Research on how music influences brain plasticity has gained momentum in recent years. Considering, however, the nonuniform methodological standards implemented, the findings end up being nonreplicable and less generalizable. To address the need for a standardized baseline of research quality, we gathered all the studies in the music and neuroplasticity field in 2019 and appraised their methodological rigor systematically and critically. The aim was to provide a preliminary and, at the minimum, acceptable qual… Show more

“…The presence of such methodological heterogeneity, as seen in our dataset, underscores the need for consistency in research practices. This finding has been also stressed significantly elsewhere in the same field [28], suggesting that methodological alignment is pivotal for the reliability and replicability of future research, particularly in a field as dynamic and interdisciplinary as music in pediatric care.…”

“…Fifteen qualitative studies were rated ‘strong’ (overall score of ≥0.80), 4 rated ‘good’ (overall score of 0.71–0.79), and 1 rated ‘adequate’ (overall score of 0.50–0.70). 66 A subsample was appraised by a second reviewer for rigor with comparable range and means. The assessment needs to be interpreted with the knowledge that comparison groups were only reported in ten publications.…”

“…In short, a perfect study from an experimental-design perspective is likely to be so artificial that the results would tell us little about how people engage with music in real life and how interventions could be implemented. Efforts to address these problems are commendable (e.g., Habibi et al 2022, Papatzikis et al 2023, Tervaniemi 2023), but the answers are not obvious.…”
