Quantification of heat shock proteins in the posterior interosseous nerve among subjects with type 1 and type 2 diabetes compared to healthy controls

Erik Ising,
Emma Åhrman,
Niels O. B. Thomsen
et al.

Abstract: IntroductionDiabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of both type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). No cure for DPN is available, but several potential targets have been proposed for treatment. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are known to respond to both hyper- and hypoglycemia. DPN can be diagnosed using electrophysiology and studied using peripheral nerve biopsies.AimThis study aimed to analyze the presence and patterns of HSPs in peripheral nerve biopsies from subjects with T1D, T2D, and he… Show more

“…SLC12A2, also known as NKCC1 ( Zhang et al, 2021 ), may regulate ion transport to maintain cellular homeostasis and enhance inter-synaptic cross talk necessary for neuronal function and restoratio ( Virtanen et al, 2020 ). Additionally, elevated HSPA2(HSP70) expression, previously identified in biopsies of the terminal branch of the posterior interosseous nerve in the forearm of type 1 diabetes ( Ising et al, 2023 ), in the distal nerve end acting as a molecular chaperone might assist proper protein folding and degradation ( Stetler et al, 2010 ), promoting neuronal survival and functional recovery. Its function in maintaining protein homeostasis is critical for neuronal survival and regeneration post-nerve injury ( Moin et al, 2020 ).…”

“…In the present study, a detailed analysis was not performed to evaluate any influence of co-morbidities. Neuroma treatment is an issue of "personalized medicine", where all individual aspects should be considered in the treatment of the patient; aspects possibly also including analysis of potential biomarkers in plasma and tissue in the future [64][65][66][67][68] .…”

“…An individual approach to each treated patient with a symptomatic neuroma is important, where all the characteristics of the problems are carefully judged. Analysis of specific biomarkers and genes may be helpful, utilizing the concepts of precision medicine to better identify neuroma patients that are suitable for medical or surgical treatment 36 40 .…”
