Quantification of right ventricular extracellular volume in pulmonary hypertension using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: The goal of that study was to assess the correlation of biventricular diffuse myocardial fibrosis in pulmonary hypertension (PH) as assessed by late gadolinium enhancement, extracellular volume (ECV) quantification with serum markers of collagen turnover and conventional prognostic markers from strain echocardiography. Methods: Twelve patients with PH underwent the same day: Transthoracic echocardiography: including measurement of right ventricular (RV) fractional shortening (RVfs), tricuspid annular plane sys… Show more

“…Strain is a possible biomarker to detect early or subclinical alterations in LV function. It is used as a surrogate for treatment outcomes because it reflects myocardial deformation more accurately than LVEF [22][23] . CMS patients have not been diagnosed using the CMR-FT method, but PAH patients have been diagnosed.…”

“…T1 mapping is a commercially available fast imaging technique initially used to detect myocardial fibrosis (2527). T1 relaxation times reflect the status of the extracellular matrix, including extracellular collagen that may be an indicator of fibrosis (2527). Equivalently to myocardial fibrosis, the growth of the extracellular matrix, along with extracellular collagen in CP, causes fibrosis of the pancreatic parenchyma (28).…”

“… 221–223 Extracellular volume measured by cardiovascular magnetic resonance correlates with known echocardiographic prognostic markers of right ventricular systolic function. 224 225 Despite substantial progress in this field, more research is needed into the biology and pathophysiology of the right ventricle. 226 …”
