Quantification of the effect of gas–water–equilibria on carbonate precipitation

Abstract: The expanding geothermal energy sector still faces performance issues due to scalings in pipes and surface level installations, which require elevated operation pressure levels and costly maintenance. For facilities in the North Alpine Foreland Basin, the precipitation of $${\hbox {CaCO}}_{3}$$ CaCO 3 is the main problem which is a consequence of the disruption of the lime-carbonic acid equilibrium during production.… Show more

“…However, these models typically require a large number of input data, which encompass mineralogical, chemical and microbiological properties of the native reservoir and the native and injected waters. This may explain why the use of geochemical models remains limited in the context of well clogging analysis (Hörbrand, et al, 2018;Alsemgeest, et al, 2021;Zacherl & Baumann, 2023).…”

“…extensive corrosion of the metallic parts and scaling are typical issues that need to be dealt with [18], [19]. In many cases, increased pressure levels and more expensive maintenance are required [20]. Paints and coatings are also preferred solutions [21], [22], alongside inhibitors [23]- [25], to mitigate such difficulties.…”
