Quantification of Ultrasonic Scattering Properties of In Vivo Tumor Cell Death in Mouse Models of Breast Cancer

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Quantitative ultrasound parameters based on form factor models were investigated as potential biomarkers of cell death in breast tumor (MDA-231) xenografts treated with chemotherapy. METHODS: Ultrasound backscatter radiofrequency data were acquired from MDA-231 breast cancer tumor–bearing mice (n = 20) before and after the administration of chemotherapy drugs at two ultrasound frequencies: 7 MHz and 20 MHz. Radiofrequency spectral analysis involved estimating the backscatter coefficient from regi… Show more

“…[16][17][18][19][20] Ploix et al 16 used the experimental method and the simulation to investigate the measurement of ultrasonic scattering attenuation in austenitic stainless steel welds. Rokhlin et al 17 obtained the attenuation coefficients by solving Born approximation and Rayleigh equations to establish a scattering model, and researched the propagation and scattering of ultrasonic waves in polycrystals with arbitrary crystallite and macroscopic texture symmetries.…”

“…Non-MRI-based techniques have also been studied: Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters correlate with cell death after chemotherapy [ 15 17 ]. Response assessment using positron emission tomography (PET) has shown reduced uptake of ( 18 F)Fludeoxyglucose (FDG) tracer after chemotherapy [ 18 ].…”
