Quantifying Human Subjectivity Using Q Method: When Quality Meets Quantity

Abstract: Incorporating human subjectivity in applied disciplines of social sciences and other base sciences poses a challenge as the nature of qualitative data is often the point of contention. Q methodology is a tool that addresses this challenge as it helps quantify qualitative data using Q factor analysis. Initially developed for psychology and political sciences, Q methodology now finds its use in many research disciplines of science, especially in interdisciplinary studies that take into account human subjectivity… Show more

“…Q‐analysis has become an increasingly important analytical technique for exploring qualitative personal opinions or categorically ranked expressions by individuals on a range of distinct items (see, e.g., McKewon & Thomas, 2013; Kamal et al, 2014; Moon & Blackman, 2014; Ramlo, 2015; Stephenson, 1953; Webler et al, 2009; Watts & Stenner, 2012). Applications in the regional science field can inter alia be found in Dentinho et al (2021), Fuentes‐Sanchez et al (2021), and Nijkamp et al (2023).…”

“…Therefore, a range of methods is applicable for supporting decision-making processes. We chose to work with Q method, as it combines quantitative and qualitative techniques, and therefore enables analyses that go beyond surveys (Kamal, Kocór & Grodzińska-Jurczak 2014) or Likert formats (Cross 2005;Fluckinger & Brodke 2013).…”

“…This allows for exploring 'correlations between persons or whole aspects of persons' (Stephenson, 1936, p. 345). Q then is an inverted qualiquantological method (Stenner and Rogers, 2004) that statistically quantifies individuals' subjectivity and offers in-depth qualitative descriptions (Kamal et al, 2014). Q is typically used to reveal the different social perspectives on an issue (Webler et al, 2009).…”
