Quantifying the potential pathogens transmission of the blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Abstract: To quantify the potential capability of transporting and passing infective pathogens of some blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Mihályi's danger-index (p < 0.10; D = 4.28, 4.44 and 5.66 respectively) and C. megacephala, C. vicina and P. sericata appear to represent the heaviest potential sanitary risk with the highest index value (p < 0.10; D = 15.54, 16.88 and 12.49 respectively).Key words: sanitary entomology -disease transmission -Argentina Many flies, particularly those linked to the human settleme… Show more

“…Since these species are primary colonizers of carrion, developmental data from these species can be useful for predicting the ages of immature blow flies associated with a body, which can help in estimating a minimum time of colonization for death investigations (Amendt et al 2007;Tomberlin et al 2011). They also serve as a mechanical vector of pathogens (Fischer et al 2004;Maldonado and Centeno 2003) and are at the center of numerous neglect law suits related to the abuse of dependents, companion animals, and livestock (Hall 2005). Some species are also responsible for transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains (Liu et al 2013;Wei et al 2014a;Zurek and Ghosh 2014).…”

“…The blowflies are vectors of a great number of pathogens with medical and/or veterinary importance (Greenberg, 1973;Barriga, 2002;Maldonado and Centeno, 2003). Their larvae also produce myiasis (Baumgartner, 1988;Guimarães and Papavero, 1999;Jiang, 2002;Sehgal et al, 2002).…”

“…bacteria and viruses) (Zumpt, 1965;Baumgartner and Greenberg, 1984;Maldonado and Centeno, 2003). These species were found in South America about 1975, together with Chrysomya putoria and rapidly dispersed throughout the Continent, with C. megacephala reaching the United States (Greenberg, 1988;Wells, 1991).…”
