Quantitative changes in mental health measures with 3MDR treatment for Canadian military members and veterans

Abstract: Objective Military members and veterans are at elevated risk of treatment‐resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (TR‐PTSD) due to higher rates of exposure to potentially traumatic events during the course of duty. Knowledge of TR‐PTSD is limited, and specific protocols or evidence‐based TR‐PTSD therapies are lacking. Multimodal motion‐assisted memory desensitization and reconsolidation (3MDR) therapy is an emerging intervention for combat‐related TR‐PTSD. The purpose of this study was to preliminarily assess … Show more

“… Jones et al (2022a) conducted a similar study to replicate the results of Bisson et al (2020) and van Gelderen et al (2020a) , but also further examined the specific aspects of 3MDR that contribute to its effectiveness. This study included additional secondary outcome variables related to PTSD and a longer follow-up period.…”

“…The sample ( N = 11) consisted of Canadian soldiers with TR-PTSD, all but one male. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, control group data were unavailable ( Jones et al, 2022a , p. 5). Nevertheless, participants who completed the 3MDR protocol showed statistically significant improvements in PTSD scores (CAPS-5 and PCL-5), moral injury (MISS-M-SF), depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), emotional regulation (DERS-18), and resilience (CD-RS-25).…”

“…Initial 3MDR results, including from three randomized controlled trials, are promising, with significant improvement in PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms, including in military populations with treatment-resistant PTSD [ 618 , 762 , 765 - 767 ]. Dropout rates are notably low.…”

“…3MDR therefore comprises multiple moving parts (literally, given the use of a treadmill on which the person with trauma walks) which, delivered by therapists and received by patients interacting together in particular contexts, are thought to trigger cognitive and emotional change. However, whilst it benefits from a theoretical base and emerging empirical evidence of its effectiveness [ 18 20 ], the combination and sequencing of critical ingredients that result in 3MDR being (or not being) a beneficial therapy are not self-evident. In this context, in their systematic review of factors associated with outcomes of psychological therapies for people with PTSD, Barawi et al [ 5 ] make a case for greater research attention to be paid to the full range of personal, clinical, social, economic and contextual factors with a possible bearing on patient response.…”
