QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF VITAMIN G(B2)

Abstract: Our purpose in the work here described2 has been to develop a method whereby the responses in the weight curves of properly standardized experimental animals may become means of measuring the relative vitamin G (B2) values of foods or of concentrates obtained in research work. The factor here designated as vitamin G or B2 may or may not be identical with that to which the term pellagra-preventive has been applied; 1 Published as Contribution No. 667 from the Department of Chemistry of Columbia University.* This… Show more

Using the rat growth method of biological assay (6), this extract was found to be free of other vitamin fractions and to be potent in vitamin B1, 1 cc.…”

“…for the remainder of the experiment. Powdered brewer's yeast concentrate 5 prepared by a modification of the Osborne and Wakeman method (8) and known to contain factors in addition to vitamins B1 and B2 necessary for maximal growth in the rat ( Figure 2) was used as a source of additional B factors. An arbitrary dose of 6 tablespoonfuls was given daily.…”

“…1930, Year Books 1930-1931, 1931-1932-1936 Considerable variation in recommendations for quality of water for outdoor bathing waters is found, but most authorities seem to favor a limiting B. coli index of 50 per 100 cc. This same value finds favor as a limiting value for approved shellfish growing areas.…”
