BackgroundIn a context where there is an increasing demand to evaluate the outcome of bio-medical research, our work aims to develop a set of indicators to measure the impact of translational cancer research. The objective of our study was to explore the scope and issues of translational research relevant to evaluation, explore the views of researchers on the evaluation of oncological translational research, and select indicators measuring the outcomes and outputs of translational research in oncology by consensus.MethodsSemi-structured interviews amongst 23 researchers involved in translational cancer research were conducted and analysed using thematic analysis. A two-round modified Delphi survey of 35 participants with similar characteristics was then performed followed by a physical meeting. Participants rated the feasibility and validity of 60 indicators. The physical meeting was held to discuss the methodology of the new indicators.ResultsThe main themes emerging from the interviews included a common definition for translational research but disagreements about the exact scope and limits of this research, the importance of multidisciplinarity and collaboration for the success of translational research, the disadvantages that translational research faces in current evaluation systems, the relative lack of pertinence of existing indicators, and propositions to measure translational cancer research in terms of clinical applications and patient outcomes. A total of 35 participants took part in the first round survey and 12 in the second round. The two-round survey helped us select a set of 18 indicators, including four that seemed to be particularly adapted to measure translational cancer research impact on health service research (number of biomarkers identified, generation of clinical guidelines, citation of research in clinical guidelines, and citation of research in public health guidelines). The feedback from participants helped refine the methodology and definition of indicators not commonly used.ConclusionIndicators need to be accepted by stakeholders under evaluation. This study helped the selection and refinement of indicators considered as the most relevant by researchers in translational cancer research. We analyzed the publication productivity supported by the Puerto Rico Consortium for Clinical and Translational Research (PRCTRC) using the structured process of scientometrics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the research and collaborations as presented in publications. Manuscripts published from 2010 to 2018 and that had the PRCTRC award number and a PMCID number were retrieved from the Science Citation Index database. Scientometric indicators included h-index (HI), average citation (AC), collaboration coefficient (CC), collaboration index (CI), and degree of collaboration (DC) analysis, and relative citation ratio (RCR) was done with Web of Science Platform, iCite, and Stata software. Joinpoint Trend Analysis Software was used to calculate the annual percent change (APC). From 2010 to 2018, 341 publications were identified with an average of 38 publications per year and a total of 3569 citations excluding self-citations. A significant growth (APC: 17.76%, P < 0.05) of scientific production was observed. The overall HI was 31, and the AC per item was 11.04. The overall CC was 0.82, the CI was 8.59, and the DC was 99.1%. This study demonstrates a statistically significant increase in the PRCTRC scientific production. Results allow for the assessment of the progress resulting from the provided support and to plan further strategies accordingly.

RESUMOA literacia em saúde é um tema pouco abordado no Brasil, é uma construção individual, envolve habilidades interativas e críticas fundamentais para o empoderamento. Relaciona-se diretamente com a Promoção da Saúde. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi identificar a produção científica sobre o tema Literacia em Saúde no Brasil por meio da cienciometria. Para isto foi realizado um estudo cienciométrico da literatura científica internacional e nacional, nos meses de fevereiro e março de 2017 utilizando os termos em português "literacia" e "alfabetização em saúde" na base de dados Scielo, e na língua inglesa "Brazil Health Literacy" no PubMed. Os artigos identificados foram selecionados e classificados por meio da análise dos títulos e resumos. Inicialmente foram identificadas 287 publicações científicas referentes ao tema. Após avaliação dos títulos e resumos, com exclusão dos artigos que não atenderam aos critérios de inclusão, resultaram 83 artigos para análise. O presente estudo identificou que publicações científicas abordando literacia em saúde surgiram efetivamente como tema de interesse dos pesquisadores brasileiros após a implementação da Política Nacional de Promoção da Saúde. A literacia em saúde mental destacou-se como tema de maior interesse, seguido dos estudos sobre os instrumentos de avaliação da literacia em saúde. O número de pesquisas sobre os instrumentos de avaliação permite inferir que haverá no futuro tendência de aumento de estudos sobre o nível da literacia em saúde no Brasil. A partir dos resultados das pesquisas vindouras, ações efetivas, relacionadas à educação em saúde da população poderão ser implementadas para a promoção da saúde.
