Quantitative trait loci for root-penetration ability and root thickness in rice: Comparison of genetic backgrounds

Abstract: Drought is the major abiotic stress limiting rice (Oryza sativa) production and yield stability in rainfed lowland and upland ecosystems. Root systems play an important role in drought resistance. Incorporation of root selection criteria in drought resistance improvement is difficult due to lack of reliable and efficient screening techniques. Using a wax-petrolatum layer system simulated to compacted soil layers, root traits were evaluated in a doubled haploid (DH) population derived from the cross between 'IR… Show more

“…In contrast, the total root length and median root number of Azucena changed little when roots were impeded by a large 7-cm obstacle, but were each reduced by ∼20% in IR64. Interestingly, Azucena appears to be more resistant to compact soils than IR64 (40). In root penetration assays, more Azucena roots penetrated a wax layer, and those that did penetrate were longer than IR64 (40).…”

It will be interesting to investigate whether the genes underlying growth responses to large obstacles are similar to those controlling root-penetration ability.…”

“…At least 24 papers have been published in the last 10 years on quantitative trait locus (QTL) detection for a large number of root parameters in several populations and different growth conditions (Champoux et al 1995;Ray et al 1996;Redona and Mackill 1996;Yadav et al 1997;Price et al 1999Price et al , 2000Price et al , 2002Ali et al 2000;Hemamalini et al 2000;Tripathy et al 2000;Zheng et al 2000Zheng et al , 2003Shen et al 2001;Zhang et al 2001a, b;Kamoshita et al 2002a, b;Courtois et al 2003;Nguyen et al 2004;Xu et al 2004;Li et al 2005b;Horii et al 2006;Yue et al 2006;MacMillan et al 2006).…”

“…The recent development of high-density linkage maps has provided the tools for dissecting the genetic basis underlying complex traits, such as drought resistance, into individual components. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping has been carried out in an attempt to determine the genetic basis of several traits that may be related to drought resistance, including OA (Lilley et al 1996;Zhang et al 1999Zhang et al , 2001Robin et al 2003), cellmembrane stability (Tripathy et al 2000), abscisic acid (ABA) content (Quarrie et al 1994(Quarrie et al , 1997, stomatal regulation , leaf water status, and root morphology (Champoux et al 1995;Ray et al 1996;Yadav et al 1997;Ali et al 2000;Courtois et al 2000;Zheng et al 2000;Zhang et al 2001;Kamoshita et al 2002;Price et al 2002). However, it is not clear how these attributes are related to the performance of the genotypes at the whole-plant level, and how they function to reduce the drought damage to fitness-and productivity-related traits.…”
