“…At 0–0.45 m depth where cocoyam tubers are formed, bulk density was high and increased with depth. The soils at both sites were generally low in essential nutrients (except for Mg at site A and Ca and Mg at site B, which were adequate), according to the critical levels of 3.0 g 100 g −1 organic matter, 0.20 g 100 g −1 N, 10.0 mg kg −1 P, 0.16–0.20 cmol kg −1 K, 2.0 cmol kg −1 Ca and 0.40 cmol kg −1 Mg recommended for crop production (Akinrinde and Obigbesan, 2000). “…The soil at Owo is of the Okemesi Series, and Alfisol classified as Oxic Tropuldalf or Luvisol (Soil Survey Staff, 2014) derived from quartzite, gneiss, and schist (Adekiya, 2018). The soil was sandy in texture, slightly acidic, and had high bulk density, low organic carbon (OC), low total N, low exchangeable K, and very low available P, but adequate levels of exchangeable Ca and Mg (Table 1) according to the critical values of 3% OM, 0.2% N, 10 mg kg −1 available P, 0.16–0.20 cmol kg −1 exchangeable K, 2 cmol kg −1 exchangeable Ca, and 0.4 cmol kg −1 exchangeable Mg recommended for crop production in ecological zones of Nigeria (Akinrinde and Obigbesan, 2000). Rainfall is bimodal, averaging about 1400 mm per year, with most of it occurring during March–July and mid-August–November.…”
