Quantized bulk fermions in the Randall-Sundrum brane model

Abstract: The lowest order quantum corrections to the effective action arising from quantized massive fermion fields in the Randall-Sundrum background spacetime are computed. The boundary conditions and their relation with gauge invariance are examined in detail. The possibility of Wilson loop symmetry breaking in brane models is also analysed. The self-consistency requirements, previously considered in the case of a quantized bulk scalar field, are extended to include the contribution from massive fermions. It is shown… Show more

“…One possible mechanism is that quantum fluctuations of the bulk fields stabilise the branes at phenomenologically acceptable positions. This has been discussed extensively in the context of the Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario [6,7,8,9,10]. Previous work of this kind in five-dimensional heterotic M-theory has been done for scalar fields by Garriga et al [11].…”

“…The effective potential was then regularised using dimensional regularisation. Fermion fields have also been considered in [20,21] where the main emphasis was on fermion representations and topological symmetry breaking. Some recent work concerning the radion with bulk gauge fields is given in [22], & for higher dimensional models, see [23].…”

“…Using mainly zeta-regularization, the calculation of above vacuum energy for bulk scalars and spinors on fivedimensional AdS space was performed in refs. [17,18,19,20,21,22]. Instead of repeating such complicated calculations, we follow to the prescription developed in [10] and calculate the difference between vacuum energies corresponding to different boundary conditions specified by the double-trace operator.…”
