Quantum Beat Signals and Mössbauer Spectra with Recoil‐Free γ‐Rays Scattered by an Oscillating Quartz Crystal

Abstract: The elastic and inelastic scattering from piezoelectrically excited X-cut quartz crystals is investigatcd with y-diffractometry from the (1120) Bragg planes using a 57C0 Mossbauer source and a resonance absorber. The investigation is performed in the energy coordinate by means of Doppler motion of thc source and in the time domain by means of the quantum beat technique. Examples of y-Brillouin spectra from the energy analysis and quantum beat signals of the quartz vibrations with frequencies even below the rad… Show more

“…In our investigations of piezoelectic excitations of quartz crystals the quantum beats of recoil-free electromagnetic radiation were observed in different experimental arrangements. The excitation energy was comparable with the inhomogeneous width T s of the Mossbauer source; it may also be less than T s [9]. We are now able to propose a consistent explanation of the important result that y-quantum beat signals were observable in the experimental set-up of Fig.…”

“…The experimental set-up of the present investigation is described in detail in our paper [9]. Briefly summarized it is a two-axis y-ray diffractometer combined with a standard Mossbauer equipment and a quantum beat device for time-correlated y-detection incorporated on the same instrument.…”

“…The first experiment by Kuhn and Jex [14] was performed with a Mo È ssbauer source±absorber combination to analyse the quantum beating in time resolved Bragg scattering from oscillating quartz and the second contribution stems from the application of nuclear exciton decay radiation of two resonance absorbers in a synchrotron radiation beam with Bragg scattering from an excited quartz between the two foils. In the presence of sound waves the scattering planes are shifted by a vector u and the effective dielectric susceptibility reads c H (r) = c(r ± u).…”
