Quantum-chemical approach to serine formation in the interstellar medium: A possible reaction pathway

Abstract: Radical-radical and radical-neutral interaction schemes are very important for the formation of comparatively complex molecules in low-temperature chemistry. The formation of amino acids, such as serine, in the interstellar medium is quite difficult. We explored the possibility of serine formation in the interstellar medium through detected interstellar molecules such as CH, CO, and OH by radicalradical and radical-neutral interactions in the gaseous phase using rigorous quantum-chemical calculations. The reac… Show more

“…The intrinsic conformational properties of such building blocks contribute to the functional specificity of proteins and polypeptides . Detailed conformational studies of natural amino acids are also essential to the search for prebiotic molecules. Bada et al found traces of serine in meteorites, and quantum chemical computations showed that serine formation is possible in interstellar space …”

“…We suggest that if a glycine radical, with radical center on the C α -atom, is also generated under similar conditions, this reactive C α -glycyl (H 2 N • CHCOOH) radical can open a door to interstellar natural amino acid synthesis. As an example, Singh et al suggested that serine can be synthesized in the interstellar medium (ISM) by the subsequent reactions of methylene (:CH 2 ) and hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals with C α -glycyl radical …”

“…Shivani et al (2017) suggested, through DFT calculations, that the reaction between CH 3 CN, CH 3 CNH 2 and HCOOH could lead to the formation of Ala. The same group explored the possibility of Ser formation in the interstellar medium through detected interstellar molecules such as CH, CO, and OH by radical-radical and radicalneutral interactions in the gaseous phase using DFT at the B3LYP/6-311G+(2df,2p) level (Shivani et al 2014). The results were calibrated with higher-level M06 and M06-2X functional, suggesting that the proposed reactions with low potential barriers could occur in the ISM.…”
