Quantum computing for finance: Overview and prospects

Abstract: We discuss how quantum computation can be applied to financial problems, providing an overview of current approaches and potential prospects. We review quantum optimization algorithms, and expose how quantum annealers can be used to optimize portfolios, find arbitrage opportunities, and perform credit scoring. We also discuss deep-learning in finance, and suggestions to improve these methods through quantum machine learning. Finally, we consider quantum amplitude estimation, and how it can result in a quantum … Show more

“…The forecast model outcomes illustrate a significant performance improvement compared to the best in class election modeling group, which could be a new technique to bring to the broader conversation of modeling in future election forecasts. References [57] [58] discuss the quantum computation application in financial problems and provide an overview of current approaches and potential prospects, including forecasting, that can be leveraged to solve some of the power grid problems. References [59][60] discuss applications to load forecasting.…”

“…Quantum computers only exist in embryonic form but are already being used to port financial problems to their quantum operating system (Orús et al, 2019;Orrell, 2020c). The field of quantitative finance is due for a similar upgrade, as it makes a long-delayed switch to quantum thinking.…”

“…Perhaps self‐evidently, increases in quantum computing power could finally realize Richard Feynman's dream of accurately simulating the complex quantum behavior of physical systems, currently impossible given the limitations in representing the probabilistic superpositions of electrons, and so on via the typical bits of data that classical computers process (Feynman 1982, 5). But the truly awesome applications don't stop there: potential revolutions in current practices range from turning the lengthy and costly process of drug discovery into a matter of an afternoon's work (Cao, Romero, and Aspuru‐Guzik 2018, 16) to the near‐perfect optimization of the evaluative processes involved in the pricing of financial derivatives and supply chain management (Orús, Mugel, and Luzaso 2019).…”
