Quantum fluctuations ofD5dpolarons onC60

Abstract: The dynamic Jahn-Teller splitting of the six equivalent D 5d polarons due to quantum fluctuations is studied in the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. The tunneling induced level splittings are determined to be 2 T 1u 2 T 2u and 1 A g 1 H g for C 1− 60 and C 2− 60 , respectively, which should give rise to observable effects in experiments. 71.38+i, 61.46.+w, 05.40.+j Typeset Using REVTEX

“…It is well assessed that the nonzero D and E values of the 3 C 60 state are due to a Jahn−Teller distortion of the icosahedral symmetry I h of C 60 in its ground state. Therefore, it is likely that the origin of the symmetry loss in the eee, t3t3t3, and T h -symmetrical hexakisadduct must be the same.…”

“…Finally, to check the results of the numerical simulation, we employ the multiphonon theory 13 to calculate analyticallythe relaxation time of the excited states. We find that the relaxation time for STE is about 100 fs, which is shorter than the relaxation time of the polaron formation.…”
