Quartz crystal microbalance setup for frequency and Q-factor measurements in gaseous and liquid environments

Abstract: An experimental setup has been constructed for simultaneous measurements of the frequency, the absolute Q factor, and the amplitude of oscillation of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The technical solution allows operation in vacuum, air, or liquid. The crystal is driven at its resonant frequency by an oscillator that can be intermittently disconnected causing the crystal oscillation amplitude to decay exponentially. From the recorded decay curve the absolute Q factor (calculated from the decay time consta… Show more

“…The change in resonance frequency, ΔF, is associated with a change in wet mass, whereas the change in dissipation is related to the viscoelastic properties of the adsorbed layer. 31 For rigidly and uniform adsorbed layers, the frequency change is directly proportional to the mass oscillating with the crystal, Δm (ng cm −2 ), as expressed by the Sauerbrey equation. 32…”

“…The experimental AFM and QCM-D results are supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations 5 of dyes adsorbed on the (101) facet of anatase TiO 2 immersed in acetonitrile solvent. [25][26][27] The simulations provide atomic-level insight into the density-dependent changes in the arrangement of the adsorbed Z907 molecules.…”

“…A 5-MHz QCM is sensitive at 1 ng/cm 2 of analyte (Rodahl et al 1995). Amplification is required to achieve higher sensitivity; alternatively, a higher resonant frequency crystal may be used.…”
