Mechanical alloying (MA) is a solid-state powder processing technique involving repeated welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. Originally developed to produce oxidedispersion strengthened nickel-and iron-base superalloys, MA has now been shown to be capable of synthesizing a number of alloy phases-equilibrium and supersaturated solid solutions, stable and melastable crystalline and quasicrystalline intermediate phases, and amorphous alloys. Recent advances in these areas and also on disordering of ordered intermetallics and displacement reactions have been critically reviewed. Wherever possible, comparisons have been made on the product phases obt~tined by MA and by rapid .solidification processing, another non-equilibrium processing technique.

UMI ABSTRACTMetal matrix composites (MMC), especially A1 matrix composites, received a lot of attention during many years of research because of their promise for the development of automotive and aerospace materials with improved properties and performance, such as lighter weight and better structural properties, improved thermal conductivity and wear resistance. In order to make the MMC materials more viable in various applications, current research efforts on the MMCs should continue to focus on two important aspects, including improving the properties of MMCs and finding more economical techniques to produce MMCs.Solid state vacuum sintering was studied in tap densifled A1 powder and in hot quasiisostatically forged samples composed of commercial inert gas atomized or high purity A1powder, generated by a gas atomization reaction synthesis (GARS) technique. The GARS process results in spherical A1 powder with a far thinner surface oxide. The overall results indicated the enhanced ability of GARS-processed A1 and A1 alloy powders for solid state sintering, which may lead to simplification of current A1 powder consolidation processing methods. Elemental Al-based composites reinforced with spherical Al-Cu-Fe alloy powders were produced by quasi-isostatic forging and vacuum hot pressing (VHP) consolidation methods. Microstructures and tensile properties of Al/Al-Cu-Fe composites were characterized. It was proved that spherical Al-Cu-Fe alloy powders can serve as an effective reinforcement particulate for elemental Al-based composites, because of their high hardness and a preferred type of matrix/reinforcement interfacial bonding, with reduced strain concentration around the particles. Ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the composites were increased over the corresponding Al matrix values, far beyond typical observations. This remarkable strengthening was achieved without precipitation hardening and without severe strain hardening during consolidation because of the matrix choice vi (elemental Al) and the "low shear" consolidation methods utilized. This reinforcement effectiveness is further evidenced by elastic modulus measurements of the composites that are very close to the upper bound predictions of the rule of mixtures. In the present work, the formation of the Al 70 Cu 20 Fe 10 icosahedral phase by mechanical alloying the elemental powders in a high-energy planetary mill was investigated by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was verified that the sample milled for 80 h produces an icosahedral phase besides Al(Cu, Fe) solid solution (β-phase) and Al 2 Cu intermetallic phase. The Mössbauer spectrum for this sample was fitted with a distribution of quadrupole splitting, a doublet and a sextet, revealing the presence of the icosahedral phase, β-phase and α-Fe, respectively. This compound is not a good hydrogen storage. The results of the X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy of the sample milled for 40 h and annealed at 623 • C for 16 h shows essentially single i-phase and tetragonal Al 7 Cu 2 Fe phase.Keywords Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal · X-ray diffraction · Mössbauer spectroscopy and mechanical alloying
