Quaternary climate instability is correlated with patterns of population genetic variability in Bombus huntii

Abstract: Climate oscillations have left a significant impact on the patterns of genetic diversity observed in numerous taxa. In this study, we examine the effect of Quaternary climate instability on population genetic variability of a bumble bee pollinator species, Bombus huntii in western North America. Pleistocene and contemporary B. huntii habitat suitability (HS) was estimated with an environmental niche model (ENM) by associating 1,035 locality records with 10 bioclimatic variables. To estimate genetic variability… Show more

“…However, in all mountain provinces significant species loss in western North America is expected to occur across an altitude gradient [2]. Our regional study in the Pacific Northwest support the inference of Sirois-Delise and Kerr [2] that most bumble bee species will experience significant HS loss at low altitudes and latitudes, which will only be exacerbated by their inability to disperse to across geographic distance due to the lack of suitable habitat [27,28,43].…”

“…Permutation tests of variable performance employed within the MaxEnt software platform used the training points to assess the relative contribution of each variable to the final averaged model in the context of the AUC statistic. A significant drop in the AUC statistic after a bioclimatic variable is removed suggests that the variable significantly contributes to the estimation of HS [43].…”

“…californicus inhabit different habitat niches [ 36 ]. Future research could examine how climate, mimicry, and floral niche might contribute to their ability to coexist in some portions of their range, but not in others [ 27 , 28 , 65 , 72 ]. For example, Pleistocene climate variation has been hypothesized to not only drive genetic divergence in B .…”
