Quaternized polysulfone and graphene oxide nanosheet derived low fouling novel positively charged hybrid ultrafiltration membranes for protein separation

Abstract: Low fouling novel positively charged hybrid ultrafiltration membranes with adjustable charge density were fabricated from blends of polysulfone (PSf) and quaternized polysulfone (QPSf) in combination with varied fractions of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets by a non-solvent induced phase separation method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode, scanning electron microscopy, outer surface zeta potential and contact angle studies were conducted to characterize the morph… Show more

“…Figure 3 shows the FTIR spectra of pure PSU after compression molding at 340 • C (designated as the neat polymer (340 • C)); the polymer that was dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dried at 100 • C, and compression molded at 340 • C (solution (dried at 340 • C)); and also the dissolved polymer just after drying at 100 • C (solution (dried at 100 • C)). Among the many observed peaks, a peak at 1690 cm −1 was chosen as the reference, which corresponds to C=O bond oscillations [48,49]. This peak can be associated with the presence of residual solvent in the sample or partial oxidation of the polymer during one or another treatment.…”

“…For example, poly (arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) block copolymers with carboxyl (COOH) functionalized CNTs incorporated UF hybrid membrane exhibited relatively low protein adsorption and irreversible protein fouling by increasing hydration of membrane surface and reducing the net charge density [30]. Further, currently fabricated positively charged graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet UF membrane presented enhanced antifouling properties due to the combined effect of hydrophilicity, surface charge and morphology of the membrane at different pH [31]. Recently fabricated CNTs/PANI composite membrane shows superior performance in natural organic matter (NOM) removal [32].…”

“…Instead, DR ir was caused by foulants blocked in the pores of membrane, which was hardly recovered, and was calculated according to Equation (6). In addition, the indexes of the flux recovery ratio (FRR) were calculated using Equation (7) [38,39] as follows:…”
