Quercetin: A Pleiotropic Kinase Inhibitor Against Cancer

Abstract: Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables can represent an easy strategy to significantly reduce the incidence of cancer. From this observation, derived mostly from epidemiological data, the new field of chemoprevention has emerged in the primary and secondary prevention of cancer. Chemoprevention is defined as the use of natural or synthetic compounds able to stop, reverse, or delay the process of tumorigenesis in its early stages. A large number of phytochemicals are potentially capable of simultaneousl… Show more

“…It is well documented that Q has broad bioactivity, such as anti-proliferative and anticancer properties [30] [31], anti-fibrotic [32] [33], anti-coagulative [34], antibacterial [35], anti-atherogenic [36] [37], anti-hypertensive [38] [39] and anti-inflammatory capacities [40]- [43]. However, the antioxidant effects of quercetin have been closely linked with the potential generation of reactive pro-oxidant intermediates resulting in mutagen and genotoxicant [44].…”

“…Following the inhibition of EGFR activation, the downstream signaling pathways and phosphorylation of EGFR, ERK and AKT were suppressed. Similarly to a number of natural compounds, including epigallocatechin gallate (31) and quercetin (32), resveratrol has also been demonstrated to inhibit various kinases (33). The current study only investigated the effect of resveratrol on the EGFR signaling pathway in human ESCC cells, which is one limitation as resveratrol may also target other kinases in ESCC cells.…”

“…[26,27] Quercetin has been studied for the treatment of cancer and various other diseases, there is no evidence that quercetin (via supplements or in food) is useful to treat cancer or any disease. [28,29] Hence, quercetin was studied as a chemical marker in rasam.…”
