Quercetin intake and the incidence of cerebrovascular disease

Abstract: Objective: To study the relation between intake of the antioxidant¯avonoid quercetin and subsequent incidence of cerebrovascular disease (CVA). Design: A cohort study carried out among 9208 Finnish men and women 15 y or more of age and initially free from cardiovascular disease. During a 28 y follow-up period in 1967 ± 1994, a total of 824 cases with CVA were diagnosed. Methods: Food consumption data were collected using a dietary history interview method covering the total habitual diet during the previous ye… Show more

“…The molecular weights of compounds 4 and 5 were 618, and the molecular formula of C 39 H 54 O 6 was inferred from analysis of 1 H and 13 C NMR and DEPT spectra. In the 1 When the 13 C NMR was compared to that of compound 2, there were nine additional carbon signals, which were all olefinic protons and appeared at lower fields. Except for the signals of the A-ring, the carbon signals of the skeleton of compounds 2 and 4 were almost the same.…”

“…Consumption of apples has been linked to the prevention of various chronic diseases (4). Apple intake can reduce lung cancer incidence (9-10), cardiovascular disease (11), symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (12), and the risk of thrombotic stroke (13).…”

“…The presence of compounds 1-3 and 7 is in agreement with data reported for apples grown in North America and Europe. [25][26][27][28][29] On the other hand, aglycone quercetin (8), which has been reported only once in the literature, 10 was found in the three varieties cultivated in Brazil. Alonso-Salces et al 10 proposed that this aglycone has not been reported before, probably due to its low concentration.…”

“…Numerous studies have shown a significant beneficial effect of a fruit-and vegetable-rich diet in relation to the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer in humans. Repeated fruit and vegetable consumption reduced the frequency of myocardial infarction and stroke (Gillman et al, 1995;Ness & Powles, 1997;Tyrovolas & Panagiotakos, 2010), the latter was particularly reduced by intake of apples or green tea (Knekt et al, 2000;Tanabe et al, 2008). A diet rich in plants was protective against certain types of neoplasms, reducing the risk of colorectal adenomas, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer (Tyrovolas & Panagiotakos, 2010;Van Duijnhoven et al, 2009).…”
