Query Expansion of Zero-Hit Subject Searches: Using a Thesaurus in Conjunction with NLP Techniques

Abstract: Abstract. The focus of our study is zero-hit queries in keyword subject searches and the effort of increasing recall in these cases by reformulating and, then, expanding the initial queries using an external source of knowledge, namely a thesaurus. To this end, the objectives of this study are twofold. First, we perform the mapping of query terms to the thesaurus terms. “…Taking advantage of their strengths, a technique is proposed for efficient query expansion. Kapidakis et al [22] make use of thesaurus relations and natural language-processing techniques to expand user queries. Greenberg [24] states that hierarchical relations like BT/NT and equivalent relations like USE/UF are helpful for automatic query expansion, whereas associative relation (RT) is useful for interactive query expansion.…”

“…Mandala et al [51] investigated three types of thesauri, namely, hand-crafted, co-occurrence and head-modifier thesauri, for QE and reported increases in recall performance. In recent work by [52], QE is performed by using the multidisciplinary EuroVoc thesaurus. First, the search query is mapped with thesaurus terms.…”
