Query expansion using associated queries

Abstract: Hundreds of millions of users each day use web search engines to meet their information needs. Advances in web search effectiveness are therefore perhaps the most significant public outcomes of IR research. Query expansion is one such method for improving the effectiveness of ranked retrieval by adding additional terms to a query. In previous approaches to query expansion, the additional terms are selected from highly ranked documents returned from an initial retrieval run. We propose a new method of obtaining… Show more

“…Moreover, the parsed term set eliminates stop words that do not belong in the query term set. Based on fuzzy query term expansion, the remaining query term set would expand the term members itself, and becomes an expanded query set (Berardi et al, 2004;Billerbeck, Scholer, Williams, & Zobel, 2003;Chen, Yu, Furuse, & Ohbo, 2001;Li & Agrawal, 2000). Finally, the search engine employs the expanded query set and fuzzy query technology to discover relevant discussions in the discussion repository.…”

“…Other methods support the query expansion and refinement process through a query or browsing interface requiring explicit user intervention [31,5]. Limited work, however, has been done on semi-supervised methods that simultaneously take advantage of the user context and results returned from a corpus to refine queries.…”

“…The authors obtained highly positive results when they combined their new method of query expansion with a pseudo-relevance feedback method similar to that of Fitzpatrick and Dent (1997). Billerbeck et al (2003) utilized query associations as an effective source of expansion terms. The idea behind query associations is that each document within a collection is associated with a set of queries.…”
