Querying Attributed DL-Lite Ontologies Using Provenance Semirings

Abstract: Attributed description logic is a recently proposed formalism, targeted for graph-based representation formats, which enriches description logic concepts and roles with finite sets of attribute-value pairs, called annotations. One of the most important uses of annotations is to record provenance information. In this work, we first investigate the complexity of satisfiability and query answering for attributed DL-LiteR ontologies. We then propose a new semantics, based on provenance semirings, for integrating p… Show more

“…We believe retrieval augmented methods are crucial for LLMs. As future work, one idea is to combine passages and structured knowledge, such as databases (Vougiouklis et al, 2023) and/or knowledge graphs, possibly including uncertain knowledge graphs (Pan et al, 2005;Stoilos et al, 2006;Qi et al, 2007;Chen et al, 2019), knowledge graph with selected vocabulary (Wang et al, 2014) and temporal knowledge graphs (García-Durán et al, 2018;Bourgaux et al, 2021), for retrieval augmented generations. Furthermore, as suggested in (Pan et al, 2023a), there are a few pressing challenges in this space, such as unifying knowledge editing (Mitchell et al, 2022;Han et al, 2023) and retrieval augmentation, complex reasoning via retrieval augmentation and semi-parametric LLMs (Pan et al, 2023b) in general.…”

“…Among other applications of provenance, let us mention causality: for example, in [18], they investigate structural causal models as a semantics for Open Provenance Model graphs (which have a provenance interpretation in the sense of the Semantic Web). Provenance semirings have been also considered for description logics, such as attributes-based DL-lite [13,16].…”

“…Attributed description logics (DL) have been defined to bridge the gap between DL ontology languages and KG, whose facts often come with various kinds of annotations that may need to be taken into account for reasoning. In particular, they were introduced as a formalism for dealing with the meta-knowledge present in KG, such as temporal validity, provenance, language, and others [16,17,8]. As time is of primary interest in KG, attributed DLs have been enriched with temporal attributes, whose semantics allows for some temporal reasoning over discrete time [22].…”
