Quinone and Hydroquinone Metabolites from the Ascidians of the Genus Aplidium

Abstract: Ascidians of the genus Aplidium are recognized as an important source of chemical diversity and bioactive natural products. Among the compounds produced by this genus are non-nitrogenous metabolites, mainly prenylated quinones and hydroquinones. This review discusses the isolation, structural elucidation, and biological activities of quinones, hydroquinones, rossinones, longithorones, longithorols, floresolides, scabellones, conicaquinones, aplidinones, thiaplidiaquinones, and conithiaquinones. A compilation o… Show more

“…61 Hydroquinone derivatives revealed activities against P388 lymphocytic leukemia; it inhibited superoxide anion production in rat, exhibited antiproliferative activity and displayed significant cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines. 62 According to these results, it may be concluded that O. majorana should be acknowledged as a promising source of non-toxic natural antioxidants, which could be used for cultivation and for breeding programs.…”

“…Among the natural substances, quinone pigments (found in bacteria, fungi, animals and plants) have attracted attention in recent years due to both their importance in vital biochemical processes and their several known biological activities, such as antitumor, anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects (20,21). In the present study, the new pigments, produced by Fusarium sp.…”
