“…In the caprine chromosome complements (2n=60), the autosomes are all acrocentric with an arm ratio (long arm length/ short arm length) of 7.0-∞ [24,25]. Although the caprine X chromosome is one of the largest acrocentrices, the Y chromosome is the smallest and the only metacentric chromosome in the set [26].…”

“…Lymphocytes were synchronized by excess of thymidine and RBA-banding was induced by using a combination of BrdU and H33258, as previously reported for the R-banded karyotype of the goat (Di Berardino et al, 1987). Thymidine synchronization is achieved by a feed-back inhibition mechanism which blocks the formation of deoxycytidine triphosphate from cytidine 5-phosphate (Xeros, 1962), thus blocking the majority of the cells at mid S-phase of the cell cycle.…”

“…The potential of the RBA-banding technique for definite identification of Bovidae chromosomes, first pointed out by Popescu (1975) and by Gustavsson and Hagelthorn (1976), has subsequently been demonstrated by another series of studies on the R-banding pattern of prometaphase chromosomes of Bos taurus L. (Di Berardino et aL, 1979, 1985Di Berardino and lannuzzi, 1982), Bubalus bubalis L. lannuzzi, 1981, 1984) and Capra hircus L. (Di Berardino et al, 1987). Peripheral blood drawn from the jugular vein of 11 animals of the Gentile di Puglia breed (6 males and 5 females) was cultured for 72 h in RPMI 1640 medium (Row, Dutch modification), supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum (Gibco), antibacterial and antifungal agents, 0.1% of L-glutamine, and pokeweed mitogen (Gibco).…”

“…Cattle, goat and sheep karyotypes show a high degree of similarity as far as their nombre fondamental NF = 58 (number of autosome arms) and the band patterns of most of their chromosome arms are concerned (Buckland and Evans, 1978;Di Berardino et al, 1987;Mensher et al, 1989). …”
