Race and Gender Bias in the Research Community on African Lions

Abstract: We used bibliometric data to show that Black, African, and women researchers are underrepresented among authors of field studies on lions (Panthera leo) in Africa. This may lead to biased representation in institutions dealing with lion research and conservation and reinforce disenfranchisement with one of the most emblematic species in Africa. We discuss the causes, and ways for the lion research community to become more inclusive.

“…Interdisciplinarity has historically been rather low among teams of conservation practitioners (Bawa 2006;Montgomery et al 2018). Further, much of the peer-reviewed conservation research based in the Global South does not feature a host-country individual on the list of authors (Griffiths & Dos Santos 2012;Montgomery et al 2018;Bauer et al 2019). We identify that the other productive partners of interdisciplinary collaborations must include people from the local communities and members of the host country's wildlife or environmental agencies.…”

“…A step forward is the acknowledgement of inequalities and biases based on gender-based differences. Discrimination against women leading conservation projects (Jones and Solomon, 2019), and underrepresentation of women researchers in conservation institutions (Bauer et al, 2019), clash with the evidence of better conservation outcomes when progressive gender quotas are in place, even within a gender-binary formulation (Cook et al, 2019)). Yet our analysis emphasizes the central role of women in artistic activism.…”

“…understanding male lions and their conflicts is crucial to conserving the animals, it is worth noting that women, along with black and African researchers, are underrepresented authors in publications about lions (Bauer et al 2019). Access to the complex social dynamics of lions is granted mostly through a male, white, foreign expertise.…”
