Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Preoperative Surgical Wait Time and Renal Cell Carcinoma Tumor Characteristics

Abstract: Racial/ethnic minority groups have a disproportionate burden of kidney cancer. The objective of this study was to assess if race/ethnicity was associated with a longer surgical wait time (SWT) and upstaging in the pre-COVID-19 pandemic time with a special focus on Hispanic Americans (HAs) and American Indian/Alaska Natives (AIs/ANs). Medical records of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients who underwent nephrectomy between 2010 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed (n = 489). Patients with a prior cancer diagno… Show more

“…Among RCC patients, those from racial minority groups have a disproportionate burden of disease. Hispanic Americans, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives all have increased incidence of early-onset disease and increased mortality rates [ 43 , 44 ]. In separate databases, it has been shown that the risk of papillary RCC is four times greater among the African American population compared to the non-Hispanic Caucasian population in the National Cancer Database and the Arizona Cancer Registry [ 45 ].…”

“…Demographic, clinical, and pathological information of ccRCC patients who underwent nephrectomy for RCC treatment at Banner University Medical Cancer, Tucson, was collected from the electronic medical records. The characteristics of RCC patients have been previously described 17,18 . Race and ethnicity information reported in the medical records was used.…”

“…Disparities in time to treatment initiation exist for many cancer types in racial and ethnic minority populations, including KCa. Racial and ethnic minority groups with high mortality rates often experience a longer gap between diagnosis to treatment initiation 15–19 . A better understanding of disparities in time to treatment initiation is necessary to develop programs or recommendations to reduce current patterns of KCa disparities.…”
