Racial differences in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders among Caucasian and Asian

Abstract: We found that EoE occurs more frequently in Caucasian EGID patients than Asian EGID patients, while the reverse is true for EGE. Also, racial disparities in symptoms and eosinophil-infiltrated tissues were observed. Our findings suggest further genetic and environmental studies to elucidate the etiology of EGID.

“…5 It has also been noted to be a disease most predominantly found in men as seen in our patient above. 6,7 A disparity between incidence rates has been noted among types of EGID with EoE described more frequently in Western countries and EGE more commonly in Asian countries. 6 Within EGE, most cases involve the stomach and proximal small bowel although, as in our case, jejunitis and ileitis are also described.…”

“…The prevalence of EoE is much higher in Western countries compared to Asia, including Japan. In contrast, EGE is relatively common in the Asian population compared to the Western population [10][11][12]. A recent systematic review by Arias et al [13] revealed that the population-based prevalence of EoE was estimated at 2.3-56.3/100,000, with a combined prevalence of 22.7/ 100,000 and 0.28% in North American and European populations.…”
