“…This finding not only provides key evidence vis-à-vis the experiences of Indian American youth in terms of NCR and depressive symptoms, but it also provides strong preliminary evidence that the impact of this cultural stressor in terms of mental health is not limited to Latin American immigrant youth. This pattern of findings is conceptually relevant for several reasons, given that we know, from other research with Asian American populations, that exposure to other cultural stressors, such as discrimination or microaggressions, is related to mental health (Atkin et al, 2018;Cheng et al, 2015;Hou et al, 2015;Park et al, 2021). Nonetheless, the finding that NCR, which is a broader, more amorphous construct, is also related to symptoms of both depression and anxiety is a critical empirical extension of the scope of cultural stress theorizing.…”

“…However, a recent MLSAAF study shows that although promoting mistrust of other races alone increases mental distress among Asian American youth (i.e., a negative main effect, found in several studies), it mitigates the impact of discrimination on mental distress when youth experience a high level of discrimination (i.e., a buffering effect, a novel finding) (Park et al, 2021a). Another recent MLSAAF study shows that young Asian Americans who deeply internalize the model minority stereotype are particularly vulnerable and parents should be guided to help their children actively resist racial stereotypes including such seemingly positive ones (Park et al, 2021b). With the proliferation of anti-Asian assaults, there is an unprecedented level of collective racial awareness emerging among Asian Americans, often led by young Asian Americans.…”
