Radar Cross Section Characterization of Corner Reflectors in Different Frequency Bands and Polarizations

Abstract: <p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Corner Reflectors (CR) are standard passive radar targets which offer one of the best solutions for SAR calibration. Radar Cross Section (RCS) of corner reflectors plays a vital role for estimation of calibration parameters and hence back scatter coefficient for airborne and spaceborne SAR images. There is a stringent requirement to characterize RCS of corner reflectors by measuring its scattering properties in a controlled environment. RCS characterization of sq… Show more

“…Most of the literature on radar calibration predominantly focuses on measuring the RCS of a passive external target in the far-field region [28][29][30][31][32]. A calibration curve is then built as a function of the incidence angle.…”

“…Suppression of edge scattering can be achieved by various methods including shaping design, cancellation technology and tapered impedance loading. For shaping design, the use of serration edge is one of the most popular approaches, which can avoid reflection in the direction of the incoming wave so as to reduce the backscattering from the edges [9]. Cancellation technology introduces an echo source from certain part of the target whose amplitude and phase can be adjusted to cancel another source from another part of the target, and therefore decrease the total scattering field.…”

“…The experiment indicates that the different levels of the RCS measurements from three types of CRs could be utilized for calibration study with fully polarimetric radar observations. (Osman and Alzubaidi, 2014).…”
