In the summer rainy season, the Korean Peninsula is frequently influenced by severe weather phenomena such as floods and rain-induced landslides. A band-shaped precipitation system associated with unstable atmospheric conditions occurred over northwest Korea on 27 July 2011. This precipitation system produced heavy rainfall over the Seoul metropolitan area, which received over 80 mm h (1 of rainfall and suffered 70 weather-related fatalities. To investigate the precipitation system, we used diverse meteorological data of environmental condition and estimated three-dimensional wind field from dual-Doppler radar measurements of vertical air motion. Environmental conditions included high equivalent potential temperature (u e ) of over 355 K at low levels, and low u e of under 330 K at middle levels, causing vertical instability. Furthermore, a pressure trough was located to the northwest of Korea, favouring the development of the band-shaped precipitation system. The tip of the band-shaped precipitation system was made up of line-shaped convective systems (LSCSs) that caused flooding and landslides, and the LSCSs were continuously enhanced by merging between new cells and the pre-existing cell. The position of merging moved from the coast to offshore areas and influenced the positioning of the regions of enhanced convection. In turn, this affected the roughness of the convective cell and the internal structure of the enhanced convective regions. Onshore, the convective area was higher than in offshore areas because of strong convergence ( 5 (4 )10 (4 s (1 ) at low levels caused by friction over land. The strong convergence generated strong updraft ( ]4 m s (1 ) that influenced the height of the convective area. The convective region offshore was wider than that onshore because of weak convergence ( ] (2.2 )10 (4 s (1 ) at low levels. Updraft in offshore areas was weak ( 53 m s (1 ) compared with onshore, resulting in a lower and wider convective area. Spatial variations in surface roughness result in different structural features and profiles of divergence within LSCSs, even if they originate in the same convective region.

A subtropical squall line moved from Guangxi to Guangdong province in South China on 23-24 April 2007, which resulted in gale and heavy precipitation. The three-dimensional (3D) wind field of the squall line in its mature period was retrieved by Guangzhou-Shenzhen dual-Doppler data. The 3D conceptual model of this squall line was proposed. On the horizontal plane, the storm-relative front-to-rear inflow prevailed at the lower altitudes of the leading edge. The rear-to-front cold inflow in the stratiform region was observed below 3 km height, which enhanced the convergence in the convective region. At the middle altitudes of the squall line, the front-to-rear horizontal flow prevailed. Strong updrafts were observed at the lower and middle altitudes of the leading edge. Some convergence centers were located at the lower altitudes of the convective region. Furthermore, the storm-relative flow in the vertical cross-section perpendicular to the squall line was revealed. The front-to-rear warm flow extended from the surface to 7.5 km altitude at the leading edge. Above it, part of the front-to-rear inflow blew upward and then forward, and the other part of the inflow blew backward. The descending rear-to-front cold flow was only seen below 3 km height in the stratiform region.

An extreme rainfall-producing linear mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) occurred over the Yellow Sea, Korea, on 13 August 2012, producing 430 mm of rainfall in less than 12 h, causing devastating flash floods and landslides. To understand the causative processes underlying this event, we examined the linear MCSs formation and development mechanisms using observations and cloud-resolving models. The organized linear MCSs produced extreme rainfall at Gunsan in a favorable large-scale environment. The synoptic environment showed the stationary surface front elongating from China to Korea; a southwesterly low-level jet transported the warm, moist air from low latitudes towards the front. In the upper-level synoptic environment, the trough and entrance regions of the upper-level jet were north of the heavy rainfall, promoting the development of convection. The extreme rainfall over the Gunsan area resulted from the back-building mode of the MCSs, in which new convective cells continued to pass over the same area while the entire convective system was nearly stationary. The sea surface temperature (SST) during the extreme rainfall events was abnormally 1°C higher than the 30-year climatological mean, and a local warm pool (>28.5°C) existed where the convective cells were continuously initiated. Cloud-resolving models simulated the low-level convergence, and the latent heat flux was large in the local warm SST field. These induced MCSs formation and development, contributing to a significant rainfall increase over the Yellow Sea. The terrain’s influence on the large rainfall amount in the area was also noted.
