Radial Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Enhances the Proliferation and Differentiation of Neural Stem Cells by Notch, PI3K/AKT, and Wnt/β-catenin Signaling

Abstract: Neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation and differentiation play a pivotal role in the repair of brain function in central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) is a non-invasive and innovative treatment for many conditions, yet little is known about the effects of this treatment on NSCs. Mouse NSCs (NE-4C) were exposed to rESWT with 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 bar (500 impulses, and 2 Hz) in vitro. Cell viability test results indicated that rESWT, at a dose of 2.5 b… Show more

“…This may play an important role in the repair of brain function in CNS diseases. 35 Experimental data report that Schwann cells treated with ESWT had significantly improved isolation, culture, and proliferative capacities, which is clinically important in the peripheral nervous system damage. 36 Moreover, a post-ESWT reversible segmental demyelination of the largediameter fibers was shown to have a non-significant negative impact on their functioning.…”

“…This may support cellular and network changes. Using ultrashort ultrasound pulses and a neuronal stem cell culture, stem cell proliferation and differentiation to neurons could be enhanced . In an AD mouse model, microglia activation with plaque reduction, clearing of Aβ into microglial lysosomes and improvements of spatial and recognition memory have been shown .…”

“…The radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) has been widely applied in musculoskeletal disorders, myocardial infarction, wound healing, and erectile dysfunction due to the noninvasive mode of treatment, cost effectiveness, lower energy level, and negligible side effects [27][28][29]. More importantly, rESW is a type of pneumatically generated pressure wave [30,31] that can induce the cavitation effect, which refers to the rapid formation, expansion, and collapse of small vapor bubbles in liquids due to sharp pressure changes [32][33][34].…”
