Gamma inadiation /NaCl doped with radioiodide /Radiolytical defect
SummaiyThe effect of gamma inadiation on NaQ doped with a small amount of NalC" I) has been studied to obtain Information on the molecular species and radiolytical defects created in the irradiated solid system. It has been found that simultaneously with increase in the concentration of colour centres the radioactive iodide is converted to a chemical form which follows iodate on radiochemical analysis in neutral and alkaUne solutions. The growth curves for iodine oxidation have been studied as a function of the Irradiation dose and the presence of dopant Ca' Oxidation takes place in two stages, which may indicate the importance of defects, i. e. cation vacancies existing in the sample prior to Irradiation. It is concluded that derivatives of V or Vj^ centres (ICl or IQj) are mainly responsible for the appearance of the oxidized iodine.
