Radiation-induced malignant mesenchymoma of the chest wall following treatment for breast cancer.

Abstract: 21 years after radiotherapy for breast cancer, a 63-year-old woman developed a malignant mesenchymoma of the chest wall. The total irradiation dose was 132 Gy. The first clinical symptom of this second malignancy was a slight irregular calcification around the implanted silicon protheses observed in a conventional chest X-ray. Radiation-induced sarcoma is a very rare complication of radiotherapy. In cases of chest wall calcification after radiation therapy further investigation should be carried out, because s… Show more

“…MFHs are rare tumors, often characterized by an aberration in 7cen-q22 (38% of postirradiation MFHs). [57][58][59][60][61][62] Our incidence of MFH (1 of 27 patients with RIS) was lower than in other studies. 55,[63][64][65][66][67] For instance, Laskin et al 68 detected 36 MFHs among 53 patients with RIS.…”

“…Acute and chronic changes may occur in the skin that has been radiated. In addition, benign and malignant neoplasms have been observed in the areas that have received radiotherapy 11–30 (Table 1).…”

“…Malignant neoplasms localized to radiotherapy fields include non‐melanoma skin cancer, melanoma, leukemia/lymphoma, sarcoma and metastatic carcinoma – most commonly breast cancer 16–30 . The development of basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma in radiated skin is a late consequence that typically presents many years after the radiation treatment has been performed 16,23,25,28 .…”

“…20 A radiationinduced malignant mesenchymoma has been considered in human medicine. 23 In the case described herein, chronic inflammation associated with foreign material could have played a role in tumor development. A previous case of neoplastic mesenchymal proliferation has been reported at the site of deep nonabsorbable suture placement in a cat.…”
