“…EPS (IC 50 , 0.38 mg/ml) [40]. It has been reported that the antioxidant activity of polysaccharides is closely linked to their physiochemical properties and functional groups, mainly the uronic acid and sulfate contents [3,21,44,45]. In the present study, CS-hEPS contained a significant proportion of uronic acid and sulfate.…”

“…e precipitate in the centrifuging tube was rinsed with distilled water, filtered, and then dried at 45°C using rotavap. Proteins were removed from CS-hEPS as described in our previous study [21]. For in vivo activities, lyophilized CS-hEPS were further purified using a Sephadex G-100 column (2.6 cm × 50 cm), and the column was eluted with 0.01 M NaCl solution at a flow rate of 1 mL/min [22].…”

“…Gamma radiation was reported to induce EPS in Bacillus sp. it is thought to act as an antioxidant that protects bacterial cells from ionizing radiation and thus is considered a radio-protector (Guesmi et al, 2019). Besides EPS increase, total protein increased as well upon exposure to gamma radiation, this is attributed to an increase in protein synthesis, a response that is unanimous to all organisms exposed to environmental stress.…”

“…Gamma radiation is a form of ionizing radiation, it can induce a myriad of responses to cells, and the responses range from interacting with different cellular molecules, altering gene expression, damaging nucleic acids, or causing cell death (Shuryak, 2019). But at low doses, it can induce the production of exopolysaccharides in bacterial cells (Guesmi et al, 2019) and therefore, increase biofilm formation. From this standpoint, modifying bacterial cell membrane using gamma radiation may be considered the key step that contributes to both direct and mediated electron transfer and therefore, enhancing MFC performance.…”

“…At present, EPSs are used as active components of some biological drugs, dietary supplements, microbial flocculants, emulsifiers, and antioxidants. They are also used as agents to combat aging, radiation exposure, and tumor proliferation [5][6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
