Radiation therapy for atypical and anaplastic meningiomas: an overview of current results and controversial issues

Abstract: Meningiomas are the most common intracranial tumors. Most meningiomas are WHO grade 1 tumors whereas less than one-quarter of all meningiomas are classified as atypical (WHO grade 2) and anaplastic (WHO grade 3) tumors, based on local invasiveness and cellular features of atypia. Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of meningioma therapy and represents the definitive treatment for the majority of patients; however, grade 2 and grade 3 meningiomas display more aggressive behavior and are difficult to trea… Show more

“…Hyperostosis and osteolysis in the adjacent area of an AM are frequently encountered, specifically showing the pattern of bone involvement [ 19 ]. If hyperostosis of underlying bones is identified especially in meningioma grade 1, osteolysis is seen more often in meningioma grade 2 and grade 3 [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…Photon-based RT is usually recommended as adjuvant therapy or as the primary treatment for meningioma. Several RT techniques have been developed: IMRT, VMAT, and stereotactic irradiation modalities (i.e., Gamma Knife, CyberKnife) ( 39 , 44 ).…”

“…Meningiomas are neoplasms derived from arachnoid cap cells. Although most meningiomas are WHO grade 1 tumors, less than one-quarter of all meningiomas are classified as WHO grade 2 and 3 tumors, which show more aggressive behavior and are difficult to treat with multimodal therapy [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. In particular, WHO grade 2 and 3 meningiomas are more likely to recur after the treatment and can be difficult to remove completely.…”
