We evaluate the cross section for the pp → pp f 1 (1285) and p p → p p f 1 (1285) reactions at near threshold energies relevant for the HADES and PANDA experiments at GSI-FAIR. We assume that at energies close to the threshold the ωω → f 1 (1285) and ρ 0 ρ 0 → f 1 (1285) fusion processes are the dominant production mechanisms. The vertex for the VV → f 1 coupling is derived from an effective coupling Lagrangian. The g ρρ f 1 coupling constant is extracted from the decay rate of f 1 (1285) → ρ 0 γ using the vector-meson-dominance ansatz. We assume g ωω f 1 = g ρρ f 1 , equality of these two coupling constants, based on arguments from the naive quark model and vectormeson dominance. The amplitude for the VV → f 1 fusion, supplemented by phenomenological vertex form factors for the process, is given. The differential cross sections at energies close to the threshold are calculated. In order to determine the parameters of the model the γp → f 1 (1285)p reaction is discussed in addition and results are compared with the CLAS data. The possibility of a measurement by HADES@GSI is presented and discussed. We performed a Monte Carlo feasibility simulations of the pp → pp f 1 reaction for √ s = 3.46 GeV in the π + π − π + π − (not shown explicitly) and π + π − π + π − π 0 final states using the PLUTO generator. The latter one is especially promising as a peak in the π + π − η should be observable by HADES.

We evaluate the $$a_1(1260) \rightarrow \pi \sigma (f_0(500))$$ a 1 ( 1260 ) → π σ ( f 0 ( 500 ) ) decay width from the perspective that the $$a_1(1260)$$ a 1 ( 1260 ) resonance is dynamically generated from the pseudoscalar–vector interaction and the $$\sigma $$ σ arises from the pseudoscalar–pseudoscalar interaction. A triangle mechanism with $$a_1(1260) \rightarrow \rho \pi $$ a 1 ( 1260 ) → ρ π followed by $$\rho \rightarrow \pi \pi $$ ρ → π π and a fusion of two pions within the loop to produce the $$\sigma $$ σ provides the mechanism for this decay under these assumptions for the nature of the two resonances. We obtain widths of the order of 13–22 MeV. Present experimental results differ substantially from each other, suggesting that extra efforts should be devoted to the precise extraction of this important partial decay width, which should provide valuable information on the nature of the axial vector and scalar meson resonances and help clarify the role of the $$\pi \sigma $$ π σ channel in recent lattice QCD calculations of the $$a_1$$ a 1 .
