Radical bulk functionalization of polyethylenes with ester groups

Abstract: The radical functionalization of different types of polyethylene, such as high-density (HDPE) and linear low-density (LLDPE) polyethylene, with diethyl maleate (DEM) as a polar functional monomer and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as radical initiator was investigated, and conditions for obtaining a controlled degree of functionalization and a low amount of degradation products without crosslinking were determined. Attention was paid to achieve a moderate functionalization of the polymer, in order to limit the modific… Show more

“…However, these macroradicals, being unstable, can lead to crosslinking (preferentially for the PE) or ␤-scission (preferentially for the PP) rather than grafting. Aglietto et al 16 described main reactions that occur for grafting of maleate onto HDPE in the molten state. So, on the basis of these works, we propose a scheme for grafting of GMA onto HDPE ( Figure 6).…”

“…The signal displacements towards higher frequencies in the peroxide-modified and in the functionalized material are more accurately seen when compared to that of the unmodified LLDPE (nf). Aglietto et al [32] put forward that, in the functionalization of LLDPE with DEM, very short chains consisting of unique units of the functional monomer are grafted onto the polymer chains. Additionally, it is well known that when chain branching increases in LLDPE, the amorphous phase is increased and the lamellar thickness is thus decreased.…”
