Radio Detection of Cosmic Rays With Lopes

Abstract: Measuring radio pulses from cosmic ray air showers offers various new opportunities. New digital radio receivers allow measurements of these radio pulses even in environments that have lots of radio interference. With high bandwidth ADCs and fast data processing it is possible to store the whole waveform information in digital form and analyse transient events like air showers even after they have been recorded. Digital filtering and beam forming can be used to suppress the radio interference so that it is pos… Show more

“…The first step of the beam forming procedure [3] is the application of geometrical shifts of the data by the time difference of the pulse coming from the given direction to reach the position of the corresponding antenna. These shifts take into account the curvature of the electro-magnetic shower front (as free parameter to be fitted) and are done by multiplying a phase gradient in the frequency domain before transforming the data back to the time domain.…”

“…Within this framework of the geosynchrotron effect, values for the electric field strength at ground level were predicted, first with analytical [6], and later with full Monte Carlo calculations [7]. By these simulations it was proposed that the field strength emitted by air showers with primary energies above 10 17 eV should be detectable by an antenna array like the LOPES experiment [8].…”
