Radio frequency cavity analysis, measurement, and calibration of absolute Dee voltage for K-500 superconducting cyclotron at VECC, Kolkata

Abstract: Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre has commissioned a K-500 superconducting cyclotron for various types of nuclear physics experiments. The 3-phase radio-frequency system of superconducting cyclotron has been developed in the frequency range 9-27 MHz with amplitude and phase stability of 100 ppm and ±0.2(0), respectively. The analysis of the RF cavity has been carried out using 3D Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio code and various RF parameters and accelerating voltages ("Dee" voltage) are ca… Show more

“…The unloaded quality factor Q 0 has been determined from the 3 dB bandwidth measurement made with a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). As expected also from other analyses in literature [15,16,22,23], the measured quality factor is less than the simulated values due to many factors: sliding contact, losses to brazed and welded joints, temperature increase, surface oxidation and cleaning, etc. A mismatch ranging from 16 to 30% is shown in Figure 9.…”

“…Moreover, the electromagnetic field results presented in this work will be provided to a novel 3D particle dynamics code. RF modeling and simulations of this kind of cavities are present in literature [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. In this work, the electromagnetic simulations have been carried out through two commercial simulation softwares, COMSOL Multyphysics 5.4 [18] and CST Microwave Studio 2020 [19], using both the "eigenmode" and "driven" solvers.…”

“…Successful beam extraction from the K500 superconducting cyclotron (SCC) at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, has greatly enhanced the opportunities of nuclear physics research in India. The cyclotron is designed for beam energy of 10-60 MeV/A for A ≤ 100 and 5-20 MeV/A for A ∼ 200, and its general features have been described elsewhere [1][2][3][4]. The basic design is similar to the K500 cyclotrons at NSCL and Texas A&M [5][6][7][8].…”
