Radio-isotope scanning in the diagnosis of pancreatic disease

Abstract: SUMMARYThe results of 117 pancreatic scans using selenomethionine 75 are presented in conjunction with a report on a series of experiments undertaken to investigate the metabolism of selenomethionine. The total plasma radioactivity and plasma protein-bound activity in bile were monitored within the period of time taken by a pancreatic scan. A further investigation was also undertaken in order to find out into which plasma protein selenomethionine became incorporated during this time. The result of these experi… Show more

“…Laparotomy findings interpreted by the same surgical team were available in 57 patients. The secretin-pancreozymin test (Burton, Evans, Harper, Howat, Oleesky, Scott, and Varley, 1960) and the 75Se Selenomethionine scan of the pancreas (Charlesworth, Testa, Pullan, and Torrance, 1970) were usually performed within a week of each other. In each case liver scanning using 99m Technetium colloid was carried out before the pancreatic scan.…”

“…In any case, an intravenous injection of a bolus dose of 15Semethionine is rapidly cleared from the circulation, so that this type of administration is not suitable for measuring the rate of incorporation into exocrine secretions, since steady-state plasma levels of the free amino acid are not achieved (8).…”
